In her 60‘s, Colleen Bryant is not ready to get old or slow down. She wants to live life to the full and in optimal health.
Six months ago, she felt she was at around 60% of her usual energy levels. She knew she needed help but wasn’t interested in having any tests. However, having had a DUTCH test, she hasn’t looked back.
“I’m trained in neuro-linguistic programming and have always been interested in how what you are told can affect the way you think” explains Colleen. “Therefore, (when I wasn’t myself) I was genuinely afraid of having a test and getting a diagnosis. I didn’t want to look for illness."
“I had to find the right person – someone positive and strong enough to coach me through whatever it was that I needed to do to get better.”
Colleen came across Shona at The Good Health Room.
“I believe the body can heal itself given the right environment and Shona was the only health professional in Cambridge that looked to have a positive take on health.”
Shona recommended Colleen take a DUTCH test - a test that is used internationally to show how our hormones are operating and where they are affecting our health. (DUTCH = Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones).
The DUTCH test measures levels of our main hormones, eg. DHEA, Progesterone and Testosterone.
It also shows all three oestrogens (Estriol, Estradiol and Estrone) and the pathways for detoxifying these (2-OH, 4-OH, 16-OH).
DUTCH testing can also show adrenal health and melatonin levels, as well as B12, B6 and Glutathionine levels. It also provides an overview of some key neurotransmitters for mental health, eg. Dopamine, Norepinephrine and Epinephrine.
For Shona, the DUTCH test enables her to support clients by seeing where levels are low on each hormone and what needs to be done to improve sleep, stress responses and energy. And if there are any deficiencies in B12 and B6, which are required in our methylation processes.
Methylation is described as billions of tiny on and off switches within our body that are involved in controlling almost all of our body’s functions. This can be our stress response (fight-or-flight), our brain chemistry for mood (neurotransmitters), detoxification (hormones, heavy metals, chemicals), energy production, genetic expression and DNA repair, inflammation response and immune responses required to fight infections and viruses, and the production and recycling of glutathione (our body’s most major antioxidant).
“If we have any disruption in this methylation cycle then any or all of these processes can become compromised, leaving us open to becoming unwell” Shona comments. “Good methylation is particularly important for anyone with an autoimmune disorder.”
Despite her misgivings about taking a test and getting a diagnosis, the DUTCH test was a breakthrough for Colleen.
“I was pretty sceptical to begin with” she admits. “I wanted to know what they were testing for and would I have a practical action going forward. Shona had to do a lot of explaining to get me to do it. But I’m glad I did listen."
“The DUTCH test turned out to be highly practical, more of a diagnostic tool than a test. It showed me how I use my energy and what I draw on in my body to keep going when under stress."
“It showed exactly why I was lacking in energy, where my body takes energy reserves from and why I might not age in optimum health, if I were to carry on the way that I was.”
“I don’t understand all of the results myself, however reading the report and talking with Shona has helped me to learn a lot.”
Colleen says she is back up to 90% of her energy, happily mowing lawns again for 6 hours of the day.
The DUTCH test is an investment in your health. For Colleen, the benefits far outweigh the cost.
“I have already recommended the DUTCH test to people I know. You get a clear picture of your individual hormonal health, how your body uses its resources and where you need help to achieve optimum health. And, by working with The Good Health Room, you have a choice of pathways."
“What’s the cost (of a DUTCH test) compared to medical insurance that only covers me should I have surgery and a monthly life insurance bill that only kicks in when I die?”
